Transfer cash
You can also transfer your investment account to Freetrade by selling your investments first and then transferring the cash. With cash transfers, you are not invested so you will miss out on market ups and downs during the transfer.

Transferring to another provider
If you decide to leave Freetrade, you can transfer out UK or US securities as cash or stock. At the moment, to transfer any non-UK or non-US securities away from Freetrade, you will have to sell them first and transfer the amount as cash. When you transfer as cash you’ll be out of the market, so you may miss out on the ups and downs during your transfer.
Stocks can only be transferred as whole shares. If you wish to transfer a fraction of a share, you will have to sell it first and transfer the amount as cash.
There is no fee to transfer out UK securities or cash. Transferring out US securities will incur a cost of £17 per holding. We charge this amount to cover the fee our service provider charges us.
Your new provider may not be able to accept transfers of all securities you hold with Freetrade. It’s worth checking if they can support your stocks before you start your transfer.

GIA transfer FAQs
A General Investment Account or GIA, is your everyday investing account. It’s not your tax-efficient account like an ISA or a SIPP, which means there’s no allowance, you can invest as much as you like. Each investment provider has a slightly different name for their GIA, you might see it called a dealing account, trading account or even a fund and share account.
You can transfer any stock to us as long as it is part of our stock universe. If there’s an exception and a stock cannot be transferred, we will always contact you to discuss your options. If you have any doubts about whether a stock can be transferred, get in touch with our team.
Cash transfers can take from 2 - 4 weeks to complete. Stock transfers take a little longer, usually around 4 - 6 weeks. There’s no need to contact us during this process, we’ll let you know as soon as it’s complete.
As mentioned above, if the stocks in your existing General Investment Account (GIA) are in our universe, you can transfer them without selling. If not, you will have the option to either sell the stocks and transfer as cash, or leave them with your current provider, providing your current provider allows this. We will always contact you to discuss your options.
