No wonder — free shares are a magical feeling!

And now we’re rolling out Free Share to everyone.

What’s Free Share? 🎟

Free Share is our new incentivised referral system.

With Free Share, an existing Freetrade customer can invite a friend to join Freetrade and you’ll both earn a free share, once they sign up and fund their account (and complete their W-8BEN form).

You grow your portfolio and your friend gets their first taste of the wonders of investing through owning a delightfully surprising stock.

So far, we’ve been testing the feature with our crowdfunding investors. Over the next week or so, we’ll be launching it to all customers.

How does it work? 🤔

• You receive a Free Share invite
• You send it to a friend
• Your friend signs up and funds their new Freetrade account
• You both get a mystery share
• 7–10 days later they hatch into real shares 🐣

Each invite can only be used by one friend and redeemed for one share each. We’ll give out more invites as you use them. If you want extra invites, just ask. There are still a few enhancements to make — like tracking multiple invites at once — but we want to get the feature out to everyone ASAP.

What shares can I get? 💸

There are over 200 stocks in the Free Share pool, ranging in value up to £200. More expensive stocks have a lower chance of appearing, cheaper ones are more common.

Within this probability weighting, the share each person gets is assigned completely randomly. It’s based on matching up two bits of info: your anonymised customer ID (a random string of characters) and the share. You won’t have a different chance for more expensive shares depending on factors like portfolio size, activity on the app or number of invites. Or indeed shoe size or star sign. ⭐️

We may update the weighting or the protocol in response to customer feedback in the future.

The shares can include companies, ETFs and trusts and some of the most valuable stocks in the pool are Tesla, Berkshire Hathaway, Apple and Beyond Meat.
